Introduction to the eArchiving Reference Architecture
Welcome to the eArchiving Reference Architecture training course. This unit is part of the standalone training series developed by the eArchiving Initiative. The eArchiving Reference Architecture training follows a structured approach, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of its core principles and practical applications.
- Lesson 1 introduces the reference architectures, the structure of the ArchiMate language and our implementation.
- Lesson 2 is dedicated to the motivation aspect.
- Lesson 3 reviews the strategy and business views.
- Lesson 4 considers the application layer views.
- Lesson 5 provides an overview of the example scenarios created for a better understanding of the core reference architecture views.
- Lesson 6 guides you through the online edition of the model.
Before diving into the lessons, it is essential to understand the fundamental concepts of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model. It is also advisable to have some basic knowledge of the ArchiMate modelling language to fully understand the architecture modelling concepts behind the views. Those planning to download the model and examine or modify the architecture elements will need the Archi Modeller software.
This training material can be used in various ways, depending on your learning objectives and preferences. If you are new to reference architectures and simply want an introduction to the scope and how to use the eArchiving Reference Architecture, we suggest watching Lessons 1 and 6 after the Overview video. If you are interested in the eArchiving business processes, please refer to Lessons 1, 3, 5, and 6. To understand the positioning of the E-ARK specifications and software components, we recommend Lessons 1 and 4. For a deeper insight, we encourage you to complete all the lessons.

Curriculum
The eArchiving Initiative has developed a master’s level curriculum that aims to equip students to work as eArchivists/digital preservation specialists in the public or private sectors. The intention is to provide students with the opportunity to critically engage with the technology and techniques at the forefront of eArchiving with particular emphasis placed on the individual’s ability to define, implement, evaluate and reflect on subject-related issues. Technological expertise and critical interrogation within their subject areas will combine to locate successful graduates at the forefront of contemporary eArchiving practice.
